#What memory is for
Memory helps a character carry forward useful context from a conversation. That can make later chats feel less repetitive and more personal. It is not a replacement for the message history, and it is not a reason to put sensitive information into a chat.
The product shows memory-related capacity and controls in Settings. Treat the visible information there as authoritative because availability can vary by account state and plan.
Storage dashboard: Settings → Wipe History
The Memory storage card displays a combined percentage and plan-dependent capacity message.Capacity alert: New stored memories can be blocked
When a plan limit is reached, open Manage to clear space per chat. Existing duplicate updates can still merge.#Manage a chat's memory deliberately
Open Settings → Wipe History. In the screenshot below, read the confirmation carefully before you continue — it names whether you are clearing stored memory or wiping the full conversation.
Clear memory keeps the messages and removes remembered context. Wipe History removes the conversation itself. Use the smallest action that solves the problem.
Memory types: Facts, episodes, and visual memories
Clear memory targets these stored items for one selected chat and preserves messages.History action: Wipe History deletes the whole conversation
Use it only when you intend to remove both messages and the associated remembered context.Memory and history have different effects
The same chat can keep its transcript while losing stored context. That makes Clear memory the correct reset when you want a fresh interaction without losing messages.
| Control | Purpose | Messages after confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Memory storage | Shows capacity and whether new memory types are blocked. | Unchanged. |
| Manage → Clear memory | Removes stored memory for one chat. | Retained. |
| Chat-level Wipe History | Deletes one conversation and its memory. | Deleted. |
| Global Wipe | Deletes every saved conversation and every character memory. | All deleted. |
Clear memory when you want to reset remembered context. Wipe history only when you want to remove the full chat and its associated memory.
#Good memory habits
Keep important preferences clear and consistent. If a preference changes, say what changed instead of assuming an earlier detail no longer applies. For unrelated ideas, start a new chat. This keeps the conversation easy to understand for both you and the character.
For broader account controls, see Privacy, Boundaries & Control.
#Open Wipe History first
Go to Settings. In the screenshot below, select the Wipe History tab. Every memory and history control for chats lives here.
#What to do when memory storage is full
The Memory storage card in the screenshot below can say a plan limit is reached. That does not delete your chat — it blocks new stored memories until you free space.
Click Manage to clear space per chat. Use Wipe History only for a full conversation reset.
#Clear one chat from Manage
After Manage, the screenshot below shows a chat row with Clear memory. Use that for one conversation. Messages stay; remembered context goes.
